2019-2020 Annual Report
Passing the Torch
This letter is bittersweet, as I am passing the baton as Board Chair of Reach Out and Read Colorado after three years in the role and nine years of Board service. As I reflect, I could not be more proud of the work we have accomplished together. Just before I joined the Board in 2009, Reach Out and Read Colorado was being provided in 128 healthcare clinics to roughly 78,000 under-resourced children in Colorado, and we distributed 138,000 books. Today, through 328 healthcare clinics in 63 counties, 115,000 children are receiving our vitally important program. We could not have had this incredible growth without your support.
I was equally proud to witness firsthand the resilience of our program and our stakeholders. When the pandemic hit, we watched clinics shift their practices practically overnight, in order to continue providing critical healthcare to the young children that they treat. Equally impressive was the dedication of our staff and the Board of Directors, making quick shifts to remote working and meeting, in order to continue our momentum.
And now, as Suzy Jaeger takes the helm, I am confident that the future of Reach Out and Read Colorado is in wonderful hands. I may be stepping down as a Board member, but I am by no means stepping away from the organization. Thank you for allowing me to lead the dedicated team of Reach Out and Read Colorado. It has been an honor and a privilege.

Staying the Course
After four years of service on the Board of Directors of Reach Out and Read Colorado, I am delighted to step into the position of Board Chair. Supporting the growth of the organization under Simon’s capable leadership, I feel well equipped and ready to continue the trajectory. As Reach Out and Read Colorado found new ways to support families through this global health crisis, we worked hard to plan for the future too. This is an exciting time for us! Our clinic partners remain critical access points for all young children and their families.
Reach Out and Read Colorado has unparalleled access and ability to share valuable resources via these partners and empower parents/caregivers to effect lasting change in the lives of their children. In my role as a Senior Executive at Children’s Hospital Colorado, I see every day how strongly Reach Out and Read Colorado is positioned to support the continued evolution of pediatric practices, linking literacy advancement with improved health, improved developmental outcomes, and improved parent engagement. These are all key factors contributing to the growth of healthy communities and in breaking the cycle of generational poverty. It is exciting to be part of this forward motion, and I look forward to continuing to serve Reach Out and Read Colorado in this new capacity. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute in such a meaningful way to the health, well-being and growth of thousands of under-resourced children in our state. I know you are too! With your continued generosity, we will achieve even greater expansion, serving more and more of Colorado’s deserving children.

In March 2020, Reach Out and Read clinics removed gently-used book libraries from their waiting rooms due to COVID precautions. Because the need for access to books in our communities still existed (and was heightened due to school and library closures), we started partnering with organizations that were already providing other services to families in need in our communities. Thousands of gently-used books have been distributed through these new partnerships.

My name is Sandra. I’m one of the home visiting nurses that works with Barb in the NFP program with Tri-County Health Department. I was the nurse who asked for the Farsi books. I have a client that speaks Farsi, so we work through a translator when I visit her in the home. I was really eager to give her the children’s book as she has a 6 mo boy. When I handed her the book, she was so thrilled! She immediately opened it and showed it to her son. She reached over and gave me a big hug and kiss. She was so very thankful to have this book. She is currently taking English classes and was excited that she could also work on her English, as the book is printed with the English words too. I wanted to reach out to you to let you know that we have started seeing clients again. Yeah!!! Last week was the first time we have seen clients since March 18th. Our building is still not completely open to the public and we are seeing clients by appointment only. We have asked that our clients and children (age appropriate) wear a face covering when they come to their appointment. We have made appointments far enough between that we only have one appointment in our office at a time. This gives us time in between to sanitize before the next appointment arrives. It went really well last week and I think our clients appreciate the length between each appointment. so we’ll do the same again this week and continue the same procedure until things change. Of course all of the kids were so excited to receive a book. That’s always the best part!”
