In 2018, we plan to build a literacy-from-birth pipeline to support new parents at both the prenatal stage and with infants 0-6 months. This is a tremendous endeavor posied to reach more than 2,500 expectant mothers and prescribe more than 15,000 books to families with infants in Denver Metro. After the first round of results come in, our ultimate goal is to expand both programs statewide, harnessing the power of books and providing the tools for Colorado families to achieve success.
New Parent Empowerment Initiative
New Parent Empowerment Initiative (NPEI) is a ground-breaking antenatal-engagement program, focused on reaching parents during a pro-active, information gathering stage rather than the reactive, solution seeking phase occurring after delivery. NPEI better equips parents to read aloud to their children starting from birth and beyond, and creates a seamless transition to step into the role as first teacher and positive parent. NPEI will evaluate participants for increased knowledge, increased confidence, increased feelings of control, and increased instances of interactions in the 0-6-month timeframe, an innovative and thoughtful departure from traditional Reach Out and Read metrics.

0 – 6 Month
The 0 – 6 Month pilot aims to design, implement, and evaluate new birth – 6 months interventions and is aligned with the AAP’s recommendation to promote early literacy development beginning in infancy. Findings from this study will be used to scale birth-6 month early literacy interventions across Colorado and will help inform and promote an early literacy dialogue nationwide.
Specifically, Reach Out and Read Colorado is interested in studying:
- The efficacy of the pilot training developed for potential expansion of the RORCO model,
- Clinic satisfaction with the new interventions, and
- Reported caregiver behavioral changes related to engagement and reading habits with their infant.
