Our New Parent Empowerment Initiative (NPEI) is launching on April 1, 2018. For the first time ever, Reach Out and Read Colorado is extending our reach to expectant mothers. This project is centered on the premise that parents may have more capacity to receive early literacy messages during pregnancy (versus the baby’s first six months).
Expectant mothers will receive the NPEI tool (an interactive storybook) during a prenatal exam. The NPEI Story Book is a picture-forward reference material available in English and Spanish. It has thoughtful content on brain development, early literacy, prenatal timelines, stress management, and trauma-informed care.
Findings from this project will be used to scale prenatal early literacy interventions across Colorado and will help inform and promote an early literacy dialogue nationwide.
Our fantastic pilot clinics were selected, by our program experts, because of their commitment to our program model, track record of results and focus on Front Range families. If you are interested in joining the NPEI movement or have ideas you want to share, please email Maureen Maycheco, our project lead.
Empowering and engaging with expectant mothers is a unique opportunity to positively impact Colorado families and future generations!
