We couldn’t be more excited to share that our own Dr. Jay Markson is the 2015 recipient of The Harold E. Williamson Award. The award is presented in conjunction with the COPIC Foundation and honors a Colorado physician for volunteer medical services and contributions to the community.
Dr. Jay has long been considered one of Colorado’s most innovative and dedicated pediatricians. He began partnering with Reach Out and Read Colorado in 2005, working tirelessly to grow his practice into a hub of innovative medical services to create a healthier, happier community.
After years of operating as a Reach Out and Read Colorado medical provider, Dr. Jay decided to deepen his participation with our organization by becoming a Board Member. Currently serving his second term, Dr. Jay has continued to help our organization grow. Having prescribed reading to more than 27,000 low-income youth and families at Children’s Medical Center, Dr. Jay knows the importance of creating a culture of literacy within the home. He believes that “Reading every day is as important to a child’s health as eating enough fruits and vegetables.”
With the support of Dr. Jay and other exceptional members of our Board of Directors, Reach Out and Read Colorado continues to grow deliberately to provide program access to every child in Colorado. In 2015 we demonstrated vast growth statewide, partnering with several new counties while sustaining existing operations across the state. We are proud to prescribe brand new, developmentally appropriate books to more than 450 Colorado families each day, but there is more work to be done as we strive to bring program access to every low-income child in Colorado by 2020. After all, as Dr. Jay would say, “It all comes down to a healthy, happy child.”
