Stories from the Field: Custer County

Custer County became a part of Reach Out and Read Colorado in 2018, since then we have prescribed a free book to every child seen in our vaccination clinic. We are very small and rural and we only provide vaccinations in our office, no other services.

Our population is very small but each child that has been given a book through this program has a huge smile and appreciation. We have found a few instances when coaching the parent on interaction has been successful and hopefully educational to bring reading to the forefront of their time with their children.

We greatly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful program.

Sincerely,

Elisa R. Livengood, BSN RN
Director of Public Health
Custer County Public Health Agency
