[ NOTE: sound cuts in at 19 seconds] On Wednesday, August 30th Reach Out and Read Colorado hosted our first Colorado Community Health Check Up: Early Literacy Edition LIVE! with Dr. Larry Wolk & Dr. Simon Hambidge. Dr. Wolk and Dr. Hambidge discussed early literacy in a health care setting, population health, prescribing books to patients, and the impact of Reach Out and Read Colorado statewide.
Dr. Larry Wolk is executive director and chief medical officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Since joining the agency in September 2013, Wolk’s mission has been to simplify the health system for the citizens of Colorado and to position the department as the leader in providing evidence-based health and environmental information. Before coming to the department, Wolk served as chief executive officer of CORHIO, Colorado’s nonprofit health information exchange. He was an executive with Correctional Healthcare Companies, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Colorado, Prudential Healthcare of Colorado and CIGNA Healthcare. In 1996, Wolk founded The Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics, one of Colorado’s largest safety-net clinics and a national model for providing care to the uninsured. He continues to practice medicine there.
Dr. Hambidge is Chief Ambulatory Officer at Denver Health and Chief Executive Officer of Denver Community Health Services (DCHS). A pediatrician by training, Dr. Hambidge was previously the Director of General Pediatrics for Community Health Services for 8 years. He is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University School of Medicine, and has practiced at Denver Health since 1997. As DCHS Director, Dr. Hambidge oversees a network of 9 community health centers and 17 school-based clinics, which provide health care to over 150,000 patients, approximately one-fourth of the population of Denver. Denver Health’s patients include over half of the Medicaid patients in the city. Dr. Hambidge is also the Reach Out and Read Colorado Board Chair.
