Dr. Kent Gaylord, and the mountain community of Telluride in San Miguel County, was awarded the 2017 Magdalena Aguayo Literacy Champion Award at the Reach Out and Read Colorado Statewide Conference hosted in Aurora, Colorado. Dr. Gaylord is a Colorado native and has been practicing family medicine in Telluride, Colorado for 21 years.
When Telluride Medical Center joined the Reach Out and Read Colorado program in 2011, Dr. Gaylord volunteered to be the site coordinator and primary health care provider for most children at the clinic. Since 2011, Dr. Gaylord has embraced the mission of the program and shares his love and enthusiasm for early literacy and books with his patients.
Dr. Gaylord makes an extra effort to provide literacy materials for his young patients and families. His kid-friendly exam room with cheerful colors, posters promoting literacy, and an exam table made to resemble a school bus, embodies his commitment to making families feel comfortable and welcome. He often brings as many as five books into an exam so that the child can choose just the right book.
The entire Telluride community is committed to literacy and contributes to the success of the Reach Out and Read Colorado program. A few notable examples include:
- Nancy Talmey, networker and volunteer extraordinaire, who made all of these partnerships possible by connecting Reach Out and Read Colorado with the Friends of the Wilkinson Public Library, the Wilkinson Public Library, and The Telluride Foundation, in 2011.
- Nancy Landau, president at Friends of the Wilkinson Public Library, along with the many volunteers who have donated thousands of gently used books over the past six years to Reach Out and Read Colorado clinics and health departments in the southwestern region of the state.
- The Telluride Foundation who generously donates to Reach Out and Read Colorado to support programming in San Miguel and surrounding counties.
- Tracy Lindauer, service specialist at Wilkinson Public Library, who manages the literacy-rich children’s corner of the Telluride Medical Center waiting room.
About The Magdalena Aguayo Literacy Champion Award
The Magdalena Aguayo Literacy Champion Award is an honor presented at each Reach Out and Read Colorado Statewide Conference to recognize a person, program or community partner that has strongly supported the mission of Reach Out and Read in Colorado and has made extraordinary efforts to ensure that their community benefits from the great work they do to support this cause. The award is named in honor of Magdalena Aguayo, an outstanding site coordinator at the Denver Health Westside Clinic who truly exemplified what it means to support early childhood literacy development through the Reach Out and Read model.
