"At Tri-County Health Department, the children coming in for immunizations vary from a little nervous to extremely afraid of getting shots. When we started the Reach Out and Read program, the nurses noticed that the books provided a positive distraction for children and promoted nurturing interactions of the parents with their children. Nurses are always telling me how much they love seeing the children's faces light up when we give them bright, new books. Furthermore, our waiting rooms are now filled with kids absorbed with books instead of staring at a TV screen. We feel that we are getting the idea across to parents that reading is a fun and beneficial activity to share with their children."
