This summer, we welcomed Robinson Family Medicine at Fort Carson to the Reach Out and Read Colorado community. With the addition of Robinson Family Medicine, Reach Out and Read Colorado now partners with four family medicine and pediatric practices at the Fort Carson Army Base in Colorado Springs. The partnership between Reach Out and Read Colorado and Fort Carson began in 2013 when the Pediatric Clinic at Evans Army Community Hospital joined our movement. With the addition of Robinson Family Medicine, thousands of children of military families at Fort Carson each year will receive brand new, developmentally- and language-appropriate books along with guidance from health care providers about reading aloud together.
Because of the unique pressures facing military families, including separation, deployment, and even loss of a parent, spending time reading together is particularly helpful in allowing children to feel safe and secure and can help families cope with stressful times. We hear from providers that being a part of the Reach Out and Read Colorado program makes a difference for military families and that both parents and children are excited to receive a book at each health check up from 6 months to 5 years. Within the next year, Reach Out and Read Colorado hopes to continue to expand to the remaining family medicine practices at Fort Carson and reach all families receiving medical care on the base.
