"I am still amazed at how early babies can learn to enjoy books—whether that is to look at pictures, turn the pages, or listen to a story. The physicians love giving books and encouraging parents to read to their children. Parents love to receive books, and it is not uncommon for me to learn that there are children who do not have books. Reach Out and Read is a wonderful addition to the Healthy Steps Program because it is one more way to encourage healthy development and learning skills in very young children. It is something for the children to look forward to. We occasionally have six-year-olds who express great disappointment that they will no longer be receiving books at their doctor's visit."
